HSOY seeks cat abuser

As reported in the September 15 Yuma Sun.

HUmane Society seeks cat abuser
A cat was dropped into a charity donation box at Wal-Mart, and the Humane Society of Yuma is offering a reward for information on the culprit.

A pick-up driver for Precious Treasures heard meowing coming from the donation box at Wal-Mart at 2900 S. Pacific Ave. on Sept. 6, according to a HSOY news statement released Friday.

The driver discovered a black and white kitten drenched in its own saliva inside an Army.com duffel bag. The Humane Society was immediately called, and the cat was found to have no life-threatening injuries, according to the statement.

The organization is offering a $250 reward for the identification of the person behind the abuse.

"Intentionally causing harm to any animal is against the law," HSOY community relations manager Elkie Wills said in the statement. "We need the public to know that no animal can be treated this way."

People with information can call 782-1621, Ext. 3.

Wills said there are currently no suspects in the case, but a dark gray or gold Chevy truck was spotted in the area around that time. The vehicle was said to be driven by a woman possibly in her late 30s.

The kitten, which was later renamed Army, was adopted by an animal control officer.

HEAT ADVISORY - KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Yuma. It is very important as pet parents that we keep our pets safe and cool during this heat. If you think your pet is suffering from heat stroke, get it to a vet as soon as possible. WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND KEEPING YOUR PETS INSIDE. If you can't, make sure there is plenty of unspillable water and shade. Kiddie pools and misters are also great ways to keep your pets cool.

Yuma Scorpions - Feeding the Pets!

Everyone who brought in food for the animals at the Humane Society of Yuma received a free ticket to a Yuma Scorpions game. GO SCORPIONS! $2,500 reward offered in dog cruelty case

The Yuma Sun printed the following article on June 7, 2007

A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the torture and killing of a dog near Somerton last week.

The body of the tan, female shepherd mix was found with baling wire around its neck on a canal bank at County 10-1/2 Street and Avenue G on Friday, the Humane Society of Yuma said.

The young dog, believed to have been a stray, had been sodomized with a crutch and was killed either that morning or the night before, the humane society said.

The reward money comes from local donors, said Elkie Wills, spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Yuma.

No new leads had turned up in the case as of Wednesday, she said. The Yuma County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cruelty case as a felony.

To report tips in the case, call the humane society at 782-1621, Ext. 106.

Local resident's pet cat shot with pellet gun

On Saturday, May 5, 2007, a local resident at the 400 block of S. 22nd Avenue found his cat bloodied and disoriented. He immediately took the animal to a local vet where two pellets were found embedded in the cat’s face and spinal area. The cat is currently in critical condition and is still being treated.

The Humane Society of Yuma was contacted on Monday, May 7th to investigate the crime. As of now there are no leads, but if anyone can identify the suspect(s) responsible for this cruel act, there is a $100 reward for their identity and arrest. As the case is still being investigated, charges are pending until a suspect can be identified. If a suspect is identified, charges can range from misdemeanor to felony animal cruelty with the possibility of the suspect serving a jail sentence.

“The public needs to realize that causing harm to any animal is against the law and they can be prosecuted. We hope that the public will come forward with any information regarding this case and we want to make sure that the pets in this area remain out of harms way.”, states Elkie Wills, HSOY Community Relations Manager.
